HP Pavilion DM1z Review

Introduction

In this Era of Tablets, HP is launching its laptops. HP Pavilion DM1z is most electrifying 11-inch net book, which is powered by AMD’s Fusion processor. What’s different about this processor is that, the processor and graphics on the same die. This in fact increases the battery life along with the speed. The DM1z attained over 7 hours in battery test, and batter its competitor Intel in every speed test. Thus DM1z may be said as one of the best laptop in 2011 till now.

Design

DM1z uses plastic resin which has some of the characteristics of the metal such as texture and solidity. But this is not despicable as plastic, it has some lustrous look. The rubberized coating at the lid gives solid look, silver coating in the edges is very much artistic and the opening up of lid which is hinged has more futuristic mechanical sensation. Presently there is no color option, only black color is available. But in future there may be choices in colors. The thickness of DM1z is less than an inch and weighs 3.5 pounds, which is slightly heavy then other laptop in this range.

Keyboard touchpad screen and speakers

HP has its common chiclet key board as seen in HP mini 210. The rubberized feel of laptop makes it more comfortable, but one of the disadvantages is that you will get shabby finger prints in the keyboard. HP has managed to squeeze two big size shift keys contrasting other laptops, compromising the size of up and down arrow keys. There is no problem in typing and keys have right amount of recoil action.

HP has improvised touchpad with integrated mouse buttons. HP has also added a line to distinguish between the mouse buttons. The 3.2×2.0 inch pad is still not spacious to navigate whole desktop and wrists sometime filch the touch pad while using key board. Fortunately for this trouble there is a small LED in the left side of the touchpad, by striking twice we can turn off touchpad so that we can use external mouse. The multi touch option worked quite credibly.

As far as screen is concerned, DM1z has 11.6 inch screen and 1366×768 pixels of resolution. This is graciously bright and a video of 720p looked good. Abut only concern was the viewing angle, it was middling because in 30 degree angle the colors were slightly fuzzy.

For music lovers there good news, the speakers were surprisingly loud, because speaker is driven by Dolby Audio Software.

Graphics and performance

This would be very interesting part because, we can get to know how fusion work here.

Coming to performance DM1z has got 1.6GHz E350 processor and a memory of 3GB which gave a performance score of 2150 in PCMark Vantage, which is 987 more than the N550 and 999 more then AMD Neo processor. There was a zero delay while testing with windows 7 Home premium, with Microsoft word 2010 and many other applications like firefox with 10 tabs opened. Addition to these applications, a 1080p video was also played simultaneously, this either dint slow down the system.

The AMD’s Fusion Zacate platform provides much better performance then any other laptop in this range. For those who are in the hunt for gaming, net book and mainstream, DM1z is perfect focal point.

Software

When Turned On the system for the first time you will see a funky desktop wallpaper with birds on a wire, and software called Fences is used to organize shortcuts. It is also preloaded with software such as Norton, skype, Blio’s e reader application, and many other HP’s programs like Cloud Drive, MediaSmart.and some extra browser toolbars.

Battery life and heat discharge

AMD has made some serious advancement in improving the battery life with fusion. The six-cell, 55Whr battery lasted for 5 hours and 40 minutes with the high defn video played, Wi-Fi Switched ON and the brightness set to 65 percent. Where as HP claimed the battery life will be 9 hours. And the battery life went up to 7hours when only explorer was used..!!!

HP has improved a lot on Heat concern; the old pavilion notebooks had a lot of heat liberation from laptop. But thanks to HP’s CoolSense Technology, now the air released out from laptop will be at room temperature. This must me absolutely remarkable change.

Finally

HP has given one of its best Laptop which is high in graphics, an average battery life for a laptop of this range, and the most interesting thing cool air release from laptop makes this unique. All these for just $449.
