The P505-S810 has a heavy body that is combined with the large screen size. The exterior look is classy due to the glossy black pinstripe texture and a chrome trim around the edges. The color scheme remains the same in the interior also. The chrome tinge is spread on the speaker grills, screen hinges and on the touch pad buttons. The size and the weight may turn some people away but the color scheme is quite attractive.
The build quality of the P505-S810 is quite average. There is slight flex on the corner of the notebook. The cracking of plastic is minimal and the chassis is quite strong. There are no flexes in the keyboard and the palm rest regions. The plastic texture which is glossy resists the minor scratches. There is excellent protection for the screen from the back side. The front also has a glass panel that covers the CLD display. There is no sign of color distortion even with strong taps.
The P505-S810 has a 18.4 inch display with a resolution of 1680 x 945 pixels. The multimedia notebooks of the same size offer high definition screens and this resolution is found to be lacking for its large size. It is very nice to view games, HD video and images. The colors appear vibrant and bright due to the glossy surface. The reflections are dependent on the angle of viewing. The vertical viewing angles are very narrow being only up to 15 degrees while the horizontal viewing angles are about 50 degrees. The backlight bleed is minimum under the maximum brightness setting. It is unnoticeable in the normal brightness settings.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard is very comfortable and responsive during typing and the backlights help with the low light visibility. The frame which is of a massive size provides ample space for the keyboard and the keypad. There is a 1 inch wide multimedia section with touch sensitive keys. The individual key action is quite spingy and there is a oft click when the keys are pressed fully. the LED backlights are clean and the brightness is correct rather than being overpowering.
The Synaptics touch pad is large and flush. There is inconsistent lag and this is quite frustrating to use. The adjustment of the control panel settings does not help this. It has a low refresh rate. The movement on the surface of the touch pad is too inconsistent and needs some time to get used to. This is related to the bugging drivers. The buttons on the touch pad are large and they are easy to trigger with the thumb. They produce a mild click when they are pressed.
The selection of ports on the P505-S810 is good. It has a FireWire connection, 3 USB ports, a USB/eSATA combo port, a VGA out port, a LAN connection, an HDMI port and audio jacks. There is a legacy modem port also. The left side of the P505-S810 has the optical drive, the FireWire connection, the HDMI port, a USB port, LAN connection and the USB/eSATA combo port. The right side has the lock slot, the power jack, the modem, two USB ports and the audio jacks.
The P505-S810 performs well due to the presence of the Intel Core 2 Duo processor and the ATI HD graphics processor. The initial booting time is mimnal. The multimedia and the gaming performance is great but not to the level of the dedicated ones. The notebook has average thermal management. The noise levels are also low even under strain. The included 12 cell battery consumes about 20 to 25 watts of power which is double the amount of power that is consumed by the standard laptops. The P505-S810 has a life of about 4.5 hours.
The P505-S810 is a massive notebook for the desktop replacement. It is capable of performing gaming, playing high definition videos and pumping out rich audio. The speakers offer the best sound with great mids and high bass for a notebook of this size. Overall it is lap friendly notebook with excellent gaming and multimedia performance for its price. Pros – great speakers, excellent battery life and good performance. Cons – too heavy and twitchy touch pad.
