Symptoms of Progeria

Progeria is one of the genetic disorders which is normally seen in children. The common symptom of progeria involves age old appearance and rapid aging symptoms. Listed below are some of the signs and symptoms of Progeria are:

Premature aging: The symptom involves signs of early aging before the occurrence of the old age. This symptom also includes occurrence of certain age old diseases and drug side effects.

Mental Retardation: This Symptom involves reduced ability of the mental functioning and its intelligence. It includes learning disorders, metabolic disorders, Down syndrome, chromosome disorders and child birth injuries and so on.

Baldness and Hair Loss: A child with progeria normally suffers from baldness. Loss of scalp hair is the basic sign of progeria. There will be unusual thinning of hair and hair fall due to non- specific reasons.

Thin Skin: A progeria child is witnessed with a thin skin which is normally seen in age old people.

Alopecia: It is nothing but the baldness that involves various forms of hair loss.

Artherosclerosis: This is also one main symptom of progeria where in the condition is caused due to the formation of atheromas due to the aggregation of lipids and cholesterol inside the body.

Dwarfism: A progeria affected individual may be abnormally short than the normal individuals. This condition is known as ‘Dwarfism’.

Dental Symptoms: There will be improper arrangement of dentures and problems in the mouth area.

Fatigue: They may notice loss of strength and lack of energy. It also includes tiredness, lethargic feeling, drowsiness, weakness, malaise, listlessness etc.

Loss of Eyelashes: This is one of the common symptoms of progeria. An individual with progeria normally do not have eyelashes.

Heart symptoms: They may experience heart related problems like rapid heart beat, heart rhythm symptoms, palpitations, slow heart rate, pericarditis, and cardiac abnormalities, heart block, and heart inflammations.

Hip Symptoms and Stiff joints: They may get affected by the problems in hip movements. They also experience difficulty in the movement of joints due to the reduced mobility of the joints.
