Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 Review

Samsung’s latest mobile phone, the Galaxy Tab P1000 is the key for Samsung to make a step in to the Warfield of tablets. Some customers may claim it to be a downward step from the laptops but the P1000 smartphone has a DNA that is very clear right from the moment it is touched. It is an Android based handset that has the functions of a mobile phone. It differs from the mobile phones in only one aspect. It cannot be held next to the ear when making a phone call. This is because it is over sized when compared to a cell phone.

Features

The P1000 runs on the Android version 2.2 Froyo operating system. It uses a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor and a Power VR SGX540 graphics processor. The display is a TFT capacitive touch screen with resolution of 600 x 1024 pixels. It measures 7 inches and supports 16 million colors. It is equipped with an accelerometer sensor, proximity sensor and a three axis gyro sensor. It recognizes multi touch and swipe text inputs. It has a 3 megapixel camera that is equipped with LED flash and auto focus. It can capture images as well as videos. There is a secondary camera with a resolution of 1.3 megapixels.

There is an internal memory of 16 GB or 32 GB and a micro SD card slot to support cards up to 32 GB. It has a 3.5 mm headset jack and a micro USB port. The tablet supports GPRS, EDGE, 3G with HSDPA and HSUPA, Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity. It has a built in GPS receiver with A-GPS support and social network integration. There is an image or video editor, ThinkTree Office document viewer, Android supported Google applications, Adobe Flash 10.1 support for the browser and a Hub that supports Music, Media and Reader. It uses a 4000 mAh lithium polymer battery that provides up to 7 hours of video playback.

Design

The P1000 measures 190 x 120 x 12 mm in dimension and weighs around 380 grams. It is available in two colors namely black and grey. The Galaxy Tab has an interesting design. It was expected to possess some of the iPad clones when it was initially announced but the final design is completely different form the iPad. The sides and the front panel have the same color while the back panel is curved in the opposite direction as the body. The resulting device is very sleek. The back panel is made of white plastic that resists the finger prints.

It provides good picture quality and the viewing angles are very narrow.

Under the display, there are a set of 4 touch sensitive capacitive buttons. These are common to any Android device and perform the Home, Back, Search and Menu functions. As they are capacitive, they are highly responsive. The right side of the P1000 has the volume rocker, power or lock key, micro SD card slot and SIM card slot. There is a plastic flap to cover these slots. The 3.5 mm audio jack is placed at the top. The 30 pin connector and the stereo speakers are located at the bottom. The back side has the camera lens and the LED flash.

Interface

The P1000 uses the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system along with the TouchWIZ user interface. The interface does not do any great magic to the menu or the home screen as in the Galaxy S. It is employed in order to customize a few applications as well as to bring up some own widgets on the home screen. The device will be updated to the next ndroid platform easily as it is easy to redesign the individual applications than an entire interface. The applications are all the updated versions of the existing ones. There are 3 shortcuts in the dock.

By default they open the email client, web browse and the application drawer. The main menu can be changed while the other two shortcuts can be reprogrammed. The home screen is edited by simply performing a pinch to zoom action. This will enable the user to add, remove or reorder the panes. The rearranging of icons in the main menu is also done in the same way. The task switcher and the notification area remain the same as in the other Android devices.

Conclusion

The P1000 is a sleek and pretty device that performs the intended purpose in a perfect manner. It does not sport a proper operating system similar to that of desktops. So it will not be suited for users who have decided to get rid of their desktops and notebooks. However, it offers an impressive performance that is very smooth. It helps the users to stay ion touch with a large number of people through its social network integration support. The pricing will only decide the fate of the P1000. It is expected to be reasonable as the company has a great record in manufacturing devices at an effective price. Also, the company has promised to supply the device with a number of carriers.
