BenQ Joybee Gp1 is the one of the ultra compact LED projectors we have ever seen. It features USB reader and also includes a VGA connectivity displaying clear image sizing up to 80 inches. This is the not the best of quality but definitely a start for palmtop projectors. Despite reproducing only 100 lumens, the images are brighter and satisfying.
The Joybee Gp1 comes along with an AC adapter, flat remote control, flash drive (2GB), and input cables. BenQ claims that commercial bundle will include software that converts all videos to projector playable format. Unfortunately it does not support mp3 files but we may expect BenQ to upgrade as it has a vast upgradeable foundation. The remote control that comes along helps with most of the access but it could have been designed much more user friendly.
Measuring 5.35 x 2.12 x 4.72, the projector weighs only 1.4 pounds. The whole kit weighs around 4 pounds. The projector without being connected to a computer displays photos, videos and play slides. The USB slot despite reading USB, also detects other storage devices. However power point slides were displayed only as still images with no animation or special effects.
It has a white body with a top black color. The front side of the projector has a left exhaust vent, remote sensor in the middle and projection lens at the right. The remote sensor detects signals only when using the remote within the 30 degree range. As for normal projectors, the foot stand can be adjusted for its height and it also can be mounted on a tripod connected to it at its centre. The external controls are touch sensitive and lights up when in use. The touch sensitive buttons are not that responsive compared to other touch devices and you are likely to face some trouble operating.
The projector is usable even when the lights are on but not even half the clarity compared to when lights are off. The images displayed are crispy and sharp at the centre than at the corners which will be an issue when browsing as you would struggle reading blurred words. Some important features include picture modes and resolution reminder. Although it is a LED device, it demands much power and heat generated is compensated by the thermally-controlled cooling fan.
You may wonder that the audio clarity would have some effect by the fan’s sound but it did not produce much noise up to certain limit. Although during prolonged use, there was some noise from the cooling compartment. BenQ has included a carrying bag which can accommodate only the projector. With the power cable weighing half of it and almost half of its size will trouble you, finding an extra bag as the projector does not include a battery.
BenQ’s Joybee Gp1 is a good option for those budget minded business travelers without looking for more features. With its small size, direct USB reading ability and an additional connecting option for video devices like digital camera, DVD player, it looks to be worth the cost of around $500.
