Review of Nokia E52

The Nokia E52 is similar to the E55 in its design, software and functions except for some minor differences.

Features

The display measures 2.4 inches and supports 16 million colors. It has a resolution of 240×320 pixels. It uses Symbian 9.3 user interface and ARM 11, 600 MHz processor. It has a ROM of 256 MB. It uses Symbian S60 Browser with HTML, XHTML and WAP supports. It also supports Bluetooth, quad band GSM, dual band 3G, EDGE, HSDPA with 10.2 Mbps, HSUPA with 2 Mbps and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g connectivity. It has a 3.5 mm audio jack and a micro USB port. There is 60 MB of in built memory and a micro SD expandable card slot.  It uses a 3.2 megapixel camera which can capture VGA videos at a resolution of 640×480 pixels. The camera has LED flash, digital zoom, effects, white balance, panorama, etc.

Design

It measures 4.57 x 1.93 x 0.39 inches in dimension and weighs 98 grams. It is built using high quality materials that gives the handset an elegant look. The handset is quite comfortable to use.

The TFT display measures 2.4 inches and supports 16 million colors. It has a resolution of 240×320 pixels. The screen is highly usable even under direct sunlight. The loudspeaker, video call camera and the light sensitivity sensor are available above the display. There is a 5 directional D-pad in E52. The alphanumeric keypad consists of 12 keys as usual.

The micro USB port is on the left side of the device while the volume rocker, camera key and the voice control keys are at the right side.  There is no protective covering over the micro USB port. The top side has the 3.5 mm audio jack and the power/lock key that is responsible to toggle between the phone profiles.

The camera lens along with LED flash is at the backside of the device. Under the battery cover you can find the battery, the micro SD slot and SIM card slot. E52 uses a 1500 mAh lithium polymer battery. This is estimated to provide 8 hours of talk time and 672 hours of stand by time.

Interface

It uses the 3rd edition of Symbian S60 user interface with Feature Pack 2 operating system. The home screen can be left simple or it can display the Home screen application. The latter is preferred as it provides access to the frequently used functions and displays information like events, new messages, etc. The Talking Theme is useful for people who have poor eyesight. This theme has 4 shortcuts that cannot be modified. They are dial pad, clock, a reader that converts text into voice message and voice command. Once a shortcut is chosen, a female voice pronounces the name of the shortcut. But this voice does not work in the main menu or in the sub menus.

You can switch between the personal and business profile on the home screen. Each profile can have separate ringtones, applications, wallpaper and theme.

You can store any number of contacts based on the available memory space and each contact can have many numbers, birth date, email addresses, photo, ringtone, etc.

The calendar displays all the days in the given month along with the events at the bottom. In another mode, a vertical events list pops on the screen when a particular date is selected. There are time slots to manage the events. It also has the To-Do and agenda view modes.

The Quick office application allows you to open and edit Office documents and PowerPoint presentations. It also supports ZIP file formats.

It supports SMS, MMS and email. You have to enter the username and password alone to setup an email account if it is Gmail or Yahoo. The other settings will be automatically downloaded. You can easily switch between email accounts by using the application. You can also sort emails based on sender, priority, title, content, file size, etc.

The browser provides options like text formatting, overview mode and limited Flash support. But this browser is not very good as in some other mobiles.

The World Traveller application displays a five day weather forecast of any city, time of 5 different places and exchange rates of up to 4 currencies. It also displays the flight timings. In case you would like to travel to some other country you can make use of another useful function. This shows two countries, the one where you are living and another one as per your choice. It automatically adjusts your event sand reschedules them as per the new time zone.

GPS

The navigational software included in E52 is the Ovi Maps. It provides 125 days of free voice guided navigation while driving and a life long license while walking.  But this depends on the location and on the local retailer.

Camera

It uses a 3.2 megapixel camera which can capture VGA videos at a resolution of 640×480 pixels. The quality of the images captured is average with thin and unrealistic colors when taken at daylight. The LED flash is not powerful enough to eliminate the noise in the image. It lacks the macro mode. The camera is capable of capturing videos with a resolution of up to 640×480 pixels at 15 frames per second. There is nothing big to mention about the video quality.

Multimedia

The music player and RDS supported FM radio are easy to use in E52. The earphones that are provided with the handset produce excellent sound quality. The built in video player can play videos with a maximum resolution of 640×480 pixels with good image quality. But these videos must be converted into MPEG 4 format with a maximum bitrate of 700kbps.
