Prepare a 72 hour Emergency Kit – Know How!

In case of any emergencies, may it be at home or office or any public places, there should be a 72hr emergency kit which should be readily available. This is really very important when there is crisis and quick evacuation like flood, earthquake, and any fire related problems or damages caused due to hazardous materials. Here are given some instructions on how to prepare the 72hr emergency kit. This is very simple and it should be updated as per new arrivals.

Tread 1: First and foremost step is choosing the container. Ideal container is the waterproof backpack. Even a suitcase will do good as this is for emergency though! This should be done for every member of the family.

Tread 2: After getting the suitcase or a backpack which is water proof, water should be included. For adults it’s recommended to include 2quarts of water whereas it is bit less for the kids. Some purification tablets for water should be kept with these.

Tread 3: Food also should be kept with this kit which are having high calorie and are of light weight to carry. The food which is stored in this kit should have very long shelf life. Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) really will do well. These foods are very costly and are also quite heavy. This kit is prepared for surviving purposes that too for emergency time, so the food need not to be a complete meal one. A can of beef jerky, nuts, hiking foods and granola bars’ type of food are to be stored too.

Tread 4: After adding food, main thing is the life jacket which is light in weight. With that a rain poncho should also be included. A petite cheap blanket if included with each kit then it will really do better. A woolen face mask cum hat and an additional pair of socks has to be packed with each emergency kit.

Tread 5: Certain medicines should also be kept with this kit like pain reliever and a first aid kit. If somebody in the family has some major health problems then those vital medicines should be packed with care and remembrance. Medicines should be always packed for 3 days. Expiry date of the medicines should be checked and if those medicines are nearing the expiry dates then it should be replaced by new ones.

Tread 6: Family things should also be added in this kit. Some of the things include candles, some LED flashlights, first aid kit, a lighter, pencil and washcloths papers, mess kit and a small roll of twine or rope. Some bills should be kept with this emergency kit which will be helpful when credit cards don’t work out.

Tread 7: A photocopy of important docs should be kept with this emergency kit like birth certificate, drivers license (DL).
