LG Cookie Plus GS500 Review

The LG Cookie Plus GS500 is a revamped version of most successful phone of LG “LG Cookie KP500”. The company registered more than 10 millions sales in less than 13 months. The Cookie Plus has nice refreshing design with enhanced user interface. This time LG has included 3G connectivity and 3.5mm audio jack into Cookie. The battery issues and camera issues are still unaddressed. Overall, it is good, affordable mobile.

Design

The LG Cookie Plus is made up of rubberized plastic that offer pleasant feel in hands. The design, look and size has been definitely appealing than original Cookie. It measures 4.21 inch tall, 2.07 inch wide and 0.45 inch thick. It is very slim and sleek mobile. It weighs around 3.26 ounces. It fits nicely into the pockets and offer better sturdiness in hand as well.

The LG Cookie Plus sports a 3 inch resistive touch screen, which has resolution of 240 x 400 pixels and supports 256K colours. This means you may put more pressure on screen with fingernails to accomplish task. It has built-in accelerometer that takes care of the automatic UI rotation.

Three buttons present below screen are in round shape: Call button, Menu and End/Power. A volume rocker, a microUSB ports are on the left spine. There is a camera key on right spine. A camera with new flashes is present at the back of the mobile. A 3.5mm audio port and a lock key are present at the top of the mobile.  LG have replaced company specific audio port with standard 3.5mm audio port, which is welcome move by LG. MicroSD slot is present under battery.

Interface

the User Interface is truly innovative. It uses the same User Interface LG’s own “S-Class 3D” as the LG Pop GD510. It is very colorful, cartoon type, and offers lot options for personalization. The Icons and menu system are nicely designed; they are grouped into separate category. The User Interface will be intuitive, fast, and very convenient to handle. This has built-in 18 colorful themes in its kitty. Kids will love this animated icons and fun graphical interface. The UI can facilitate maximum of 40 widgets on home screen that offer one touch access to various apps.

The homescreen consists of 3 pages: one for widgets, another for favorite contacts and last one for LiveSquare. LG’s own feature called LiveSquare will help you to get connected with your loved ones.  LiveSquare will record frequently used contacts and messages graphically.

The Cookie Fresh comes with the 1000 entry phonebook with a room for five contact entry, notes, email address, photo and street address. You can search the contact either with given name or family name. It offers full qwerty keyboard in landscape mode and an alphanumeric keyboard in portrait mode. We don’t have any grains with onscreen keyboard though the keys may appear bit small for some people and it manages to offer relatively faster typing.

The LG Cookie Plus has three built-in apps for accessing MySpace, Twitter and Facebook. They deliver a few features for a budget phone and the interface is simple and user friendly. These apps worked bit slow with limited functionality.

The significant advantage of the Cookie Plus over its predecessor is that it supports 3G connectivity. This means the web pages gets loaded quickly and downloading & uploading time gets reduced significantly. You can browse the internet using Wi-fi too. You can avail data transfer through Bluetooth, GPRS and USB v2.0 connectivities.

The web browser is decent and it supports Full HTML. The complex WebPages takes a bit time to load, otherwise the scrolling becomes difficult. We recommend you to download and install Opera Mini 5 browser, since it is predominantly quicker and facilitate tabbed browsing and supports multitouch zoom in/out.

Camera and Multimedia

The LG Cookie Plus is equipped with 3 megapixel camera which captures images at 2048×1536 pixels. the camera interface is simple and has refreshing design with large, finger friendly icons. Unfortunately, there is no flash included. The image quality is not so good –the photos appeared unsaturated, soft and dull. You can record videos at 10fps and maximum resolution for video capturing is just QVGA. The videos and images can be shared to social networking sites like Facebook, Youtube and Photobucket. Unfortunately, it played just H.263 quality videos and failed to playback MPEG-4 quality videos.

The video and audio interface has superb design. The interface is simple and but it offers only standard features. Interface includes forward, reverse, skip, pause, creating & editing play lists. The sound output from speaker and as well as from headphone is satisfactory. The bass effect is fine and mids, lows sounded excellent without any distortion. It supports most of the popular audio and video formats. You will get a FM radio with RDS feature.

We have to admit the fact that Cookie Plus does not offer better function than its predecessor Cookie KP500, at least in terms of multimedia and camera. We liked the inclusion of 3.5mm headphone jack.

The other essential features include Alarm, Calculator, To-Do / Tasks, Calendar, Photo editor, World Clock, Notes, PDF viewer, Document viewer, speaker phone, text and multimedia messaging, instant messaging, voice recorder and Organizer.

Performance

The important feature “in-call quality” is good in this Cookie plus. We could hear the sound with less distortion.

The Cookie plus is equipped with 900mAh Lithium ion battery. It delivers 3.66 hours of talktime and keeps the phone for 400 hours on standby. It is slightly better than original Cookie. But Still comparing it to most of the higher end mobile, battery is disappointing.

    Hi,
I have LG cookie plus GS500v phone. I bought it to use internet only. problem is that when I connect it to my laptop using PC suit for internet, it do not allow me to add any operator. Allow me to explain in detail

I have installed PC suit on laptop. i have reliance GSM service with GPRS enabled. To use the phone as MODEM we have to first go for operator selection in PC suit. I wonder to found that it has a dropdown containing only three operators

    - vodaphone
    - Idea
    -Airtel

Now how to add Reliance operator? Anyone have such faced such problem before?
i tried Adding operator manually but not allowing to add.

Help me !!! As soon as possible (rane.suraj@gmail.com)

i hv used the phone with all operator. Tatadocomo, reliance, Airtel …… At start i also faced the same problem.
When u want to connect to internet, call the operator and ask only for APN for tatadocomo its TATA.DOCOMO.INTERNET find for relicance also the dialling no is*99# these r only setting u need to fill in lg internet kit.

      • SurajRane says:

        But what about operature selection.

can u give me steps. i have GPRS active in my cell now.

just i am not getting settings in lg suit.

I have an issue with the voice dialing feature on this phone. I can access the menu, but when I give it a command to call a certain number, it keeps asking me to “please say a command”, no matter what i set the sensitivity to. is there any way to train the voice recognition on this phone? Also same problem when I have my bluetooth ear bud in. I cannot affect voice dialing. I have a “Motorola HS620″ blue tooth headset. Is it a compatibility issue???

  18. Tom says:

I absolutely love my cookie plus. However I am having two issues. My first is the voice dialing feature- it is always confused at what I am asking it. not very useful. It keeps asking me to say a command, but does not hear me even when i change the sensitivity settings. My second issue is that same thing when I have my blue tooth device connected. It is the voice dialing basically that I have an issue with. I am on the road a lot, and I need this feature.
