Intel has launched its first six-core processor on Tuesday. Xeon 5600, the new series includes 15 products and all are built using a 32-nanometer processor. The 5500 series which is its predecessor was built on 45 nanometer processor which was a year ago. The new series of products include speed and are up to 60% more performance efficient than the previous series. This has resulted in using a single 5600 processor instead of fifteen 5500 series processors.
The new series offers improved security and new security instructions delivering speeder data decryption and encryption. It also includes Intel’s TXT processor, a security shield that provides more protection. The new series products are also power efficient. For example the six-core L5640 can deliver the same performance as X5570 but saves up to 30% of power. The new series products are compatible with the same mother board having sockets for 5500 series.
Manufacturers like Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Cisco are expected to introduce processors with the 5600 series chips. Price ranging is expected to be between $530 and $958 for every 1000 chips and a 7 year life cycle support will be included. Intel also introduced a six-Core processor in San Francisco last week at Game Developers Conference. Chips were priced around $999 every 1000 units and each had a clock speed of 3.33 Ghz.
The new series chips will be marketed by the end of this month and will compete with the 8 and 12 core Opteron chips.
