Design

The G73JW appears to be little bulkier than the normal gaming oriented notebooks. This is mainly due to the largely sized posterior. The reason to have such a design is that the company has decided to provide a superior cooling system to the notebook. It uses a couple of large exhaust grills on the back side of the laptop. These grills are used to exhaust the heat that is generated by the CPU as well as the GPU.

The design of the laptop is good and is made with a matte finished black material on the exterior. A small logo of the Asus is printed on top of the screen cover. The LCD screen is the only glossy surface on the laptop. There is no other glossy surface both on the interior as well as on the exterior. The glossy screen does not suffer from reflections caused by too much of lighting. This is effective provided the screen is positioned rightly.

There is some blue LED lighting on the interior. These are not too bright to be apparent or annoying. The trim under the screen and the four quick access buttons placed above the keyboard are provided with LED backlights. The backlighting under the screen is hardly visible under the normal lighting conditions and it is not too bright to light up the area around the notebook even in the dark environments. The keyboard is completely equipped with white LED backlights.

The G73JW has a wonderful finish and fit that makes it feel strong. The panel gaps all around the notebook are even and the plastic sections are flush with one another. The cover of the screen is very protective and prevents the LCD from any physical damage. The LCD does not suffer from any kind of ripples or distortion even when it is subjected to heavy pressure. The palm rest also does not experience any flex. The keyboard experience slight flex especially on the area above the optical drive. There is a single access panel at the bottom of the chassis. This is very useful to easily upgrade the laptop. it provides the access to the hard drive bays, 3 RAM slots and the wireless card.

Screen and Speakers

The G73JW has a nice 17.3 inch display with an aspect ratio of 169. The display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The display is a glossy or glare type of display and hence the users will have some reflections. But this is not that bad as the glass displays that are available on certain other laptops. The display produces excellent contrast and color vibrancy along with highly good levels of black. The viewing angles are good with about 20 degrees of vertical movement and about 75 degrees of horizontal movement.

The on board speaker are very effective for a gaming laptop. but these speakers are not as good as the ones that are found on the other multimedia laptops. The averagely sized speakers are placed above the keyboard and they are covered by a mesh cover that is extended below the screen also. They also have a subwoofer at the bottom. They are good to listen to the in game audio, to listen to music or to watch a movie. The users can achieve high quality of audio with the help of an external speaker of the headphones.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The G73JW has a nice and spacious keyboard. The keyboard has a separate number pad and even then there is a lot of space. The keyboard is quite comfortable to type for long durations of time and it has built in LED backlights that make it easy to use even in dark environments. The Chiclet or the island style keyboard provides a lot of space between the keys and this may reduce the errors in typing. The key actions are smooth and quiet and they require less pressure to activate them,

The G73JW laptop uses a Synaptics touchpad is quite easy to use during games and when navigating through webpages. It supports the multi touch feature of pinch to zoom alone. The two finger scrolling and other advanced features are not supported. The touch pad is made of a matte material and is wide enough. The two touch pad offer shallow type of feedback and they make quiet clicks when they are pressed.

Ports

The G73JW has a nice collection of ports that include a USB 3.0 port, three USB 2.0 ports, VGA port, Ethernet interface, HDMI port and a SDHC memory card reader. It also has a DVD burner and a Blu-ray reader. The only thing lacked is an eSATA port. The front side has nothing but the activity lights while the back side has the Kensington lock slot and the battery. The left side has the optical drive, LAN interface, audio jacks and a couple of USB 2.0 ports. The right side has the other USB 2.0 port, DC power input, VGS port, HDMI port, USB 3.0 port and the SDHC card slot.

Performance

The G73JW has 8 GB of RAM, couple of 500 GB hard drives, Intel Core i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX graphics card. These features makes the notebook handle whatever it is subjected to and makes it produce good gaming and overall performance.

It is good in playing the high definition 720 pixel and 1080 pixel videos. The laptop has an impressive cooling system with a couple of large vents to exhaust the heat generated by the CPU and the GPU. The fan works with great speed and it does not produce much sound even under high pressure. The 8 cell battery is capable of producing a life of 2 hours and 48 minutes to the laptop under the balanced Windows 7 profile. Overall, the G73JW has a great quality of build, a functional design and an excellent display. It has to be improved when it comes to the multi touch features, operational speed and the on board RAID support.
