Apple iPhone 4 versus BlackBerry Storm 2 9550

Apple invented touch screen mobiles and it is still leading the race. The features possessed by Apple handsets have made its competitors difficult to win the race. Blackberry has introduced the Storm 2 9550 handset. Blackberry has corrected some of its past mistakes in the Storm 2. But when Storm 2 is compared with Apple iPhone 4, we obviously know the result. Let us take a look at the comparison.

Design

Storm 2 9550 measures 112.5×62.2×14 mm while iPhone 4 measures 115.2×58.6×9.3 mm. The former is little thicker when compared to the other touch screen handsets available in the market. The latter is very thin and it has a glossy glass cover on both the sides. This cover is finger print resistant. The Storm 2 weighs 160 grams which makes it heavier than the iPhone that weighs just 137 grams. iPhone comes in white and black colors while the BB Storm2 comes only in black color.

Screen

Apple iPhone uses a TFT capacitive touch screen of 3.5 inches. It has a resolution of 640×960 pixels and supports 16 million colors. The BB Storm 2 also has a TFT capacitive touch screen. But this screen measures only 3.25 inches and has a resolution of 360×480 pixels supporting jus 65 K colors. Moreover, the screen of iPhone is scratch and finger print resistant. It also has a good multi touch support. The BB lacks the multi touch feature and screen is not as responsive as in iPhone.

Camera

The cameras in both the handsets are upgraded versions of the previous generations. iPhone 4 uses a 5 megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash. It is capable of capturing images at a maximum resolution of 2592×1944 pixels. Also 720 p videos at 30 frames per second can be recorded. The camera has touch focus and geotagging features also. The BB has a 3.15 megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash. But it can capture images with a maximum resolution of 2048×1536 pixels only. It is capable of capturing videos. It also has the geotagging and image stabilization features.  The iPhone has a front facing camera called FaceTime for video calling. But this is not available in BB Storm2. As the iPhone has a higher resolution than BB Storm2, it produces good quality images than the latter.

Memory

IPhone can have an internal memory of 16GB/32GB depending on the user. It does not have a memory card slot which is not of concern with such a large amount of internal storage. The BB has an internal memory of only 2 GB and a separate micro SD memory card has to be purchased by the user. The micro SD card slot is expandable and can support up to 16 GB.

Music

Both the handsets have a 3.5mm audio jack. The iphone has an iPod in it while the BB Storm2 has the BB Media Sync feature. Both these features allow the user to synchronize the music using iTunes and Windows Media Player. In this aspect both the mobiles function equally.

Features

The BB Storm 2 uses the BB OS 5.0 operating system which is superior to the BB OS 4.7 used by Storm. But the touch response is not very good in BB Storm 2.  The iPhone uses the iOS 4.0 operating system which provides a lot of features to the device. Moreover, the latter has the multitasking ability. It has the Gyro Axis feature that provides excellent gaming performance whereas BB Storm 2 is not very good in this aspect.

Connectivity

Both the handsets support GSM, EDGE with HSDPA of 7.2 Mbps, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP technology and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity. But iPhone has the 5.76 Mbps HSUPA EDGE support while BB Storm 2 has the CDMA support. The Mobile Safari browser is used in the former while the HTML browser is used in the latter.  Both have the A GPS receiver. The former uses Google Maps and the Latter uses BB Maps.

Battery

BB Strom2 uses a 1400 mAh lithium ion battery that provides up to 5 hours and 30 minutes of talk time and 270 hours of stand by time. The iPhone uses a 1420 mAh lithium ion battery that provides up to 7 hours of talk time and 300 hours of stand by time. Again iPhone tops in battery performance.

You’re miles out with the IPhone. The point of a phone is to make calls. IPhone 4, even 3gs has a real aerial problem. Both are poor reception wise. On the UK’s top network the IPhones, in particular the 4, drops their connections at will, especially in low signal areas. Case or no case!

I’m sat with no signal while people at the side of me, even with cheap non smart phones merrily chat away with 4 and 5 bars coverage. It’s murder when you’re attempting to do business on the likes of a train. This is a major design fault, and not going to be fixed in a hurry. My buddy just  told me he dropped 23 calls yesterday and has had enough of the Iphone 4. He’s off to look at the HTC and Blackberry Storm 2.

I’ve stuck with the IPhone 3 32gs, even though it drops calls, while I decide which way to go. Jobs believes his own publicity. He’s lost touch with reality. What idiot would put a phone on the market that you can only hold to your ear with one finger for fear of it dropping a call if you hold it any other way? Wait for the fix, and I don’t mean the case, that only half fixes the signal problem. The redesign is coming. This is Job’s Toyota Moment, like them, he just can’t see it!
