Ford has announced a new Mustang with 550 hp in the Chicago Auto show, the all new Shelby GT500. Two ways of improving car’s speed is either by increasing power or losing weight. Ford has done both. It has a 5.4 liter supercharge aluminum V8 engine. Its engine is 10 hp stronger than the 2010 model but surprisingly, it is 102 pounds less in weight. It is made possible with the reduction of weight in the front axle which will definitely offer good performance on the road. Its front to rear weight balance will help in tight turns.
Unlike the 2010 model having cast iron, this model has aluminum block. To enhance the durability, the cylinders are coated with iron oxide and iron on the inside of the block. The coat thickness is only 150 micron made possible by the plasma deposition process. The iron coating adhesion is improved by roughening the cast bores resulting in sliding surface in the cylinder.
You may not worry about the supercharged engine’s aluminum block, but the engineers who were on the floor promised it would offer durability for 200,000 miles. The sprayed-in lining which is much thin helps in easy transfer of the combustion heat out of the cylinders. Its lining is completely different from the traditional model. This has resulted in reducing more than one pound per cylinder.
The new engine offers more electric power and it the EPA is improved by 1 mpg both in city and highways made possible by the aerodynamic parts underneath. It can offer 23 mpg on highway and impressive 15 mpg in the city just enough to escape Gas Guzzler penalty. The ride height has been lowered to 11mm while the rear seat are also lowered to 8 mm. The vehicle has enhanced handling features with the presence of stiffer spring and the newly designed chassis.
2011 Shelby GT500 features SVT performance package which includes 19-inch wheels at the front the 20-inch rear wheels and also an optional glass roof. More fuel economy and improved handling in the car we liked the most, it looks like it going to be a one heck of a performance car on the road.
