Review of ASUS Eee PC 1001P SeaShell

ASUS has made entry into the field of notebook designing by releasing PC 1001P. Many features of 1001P is similar to its predecessor 1005PE except some like the larger hard drive, battery size and the Chiclet type keyboard.

The display size is 10.1 inches diagonally with a WSVGA resolution of 1024x600pixels. This notebook uses Intel’s processor and integrated graphics card such as Atom N450 of and GMA 3150. The 32 bit basic version of Windows 7 is preinstalled in this notebook. It has a 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM of 1GB and 160GB of SATA HD 5400.6 from Seagate. It supports both Wi-Fi and LAN and also has a 4 in 1 memory card slot. A 4400mAh 6-cell Li-ion battery is used.

The dimensions of 1001P are 0.89 to 1.40×10.2×6.9 inches and it weighs 2.81 pounds without the AC adapter. It costs $299.99 only and hence it is cheaper than its predecessor. The chassis of 1001P is similar to 1005PE but the lid design is different.  The screen is covered with a material that has a textured wavy pattern.

It looks simple without any glossy appearance as in 1005PE. The SeaShell logo is found at the top of the notebook. Unusually, being a budget model it has a solid build with a non flexible plastic material of matte black color and a firm keyboard. The chassis is made of highly tolerant materials.

The RAM cover can be accessed easily by means of an access panel. You will have to remove only one screw on this panel at the bottom. But the hard drive does not have a panel that is easily accessible.

Screen and Speakers

The display size is 10.1 inches diagonally with a WSVGA resolution of 1024x600pixels only. This display has LED backlights and it is matte textured to avoid reflections or glare when used under bright light. The display produces excellent color contrast and saturation levels in spite of its matte texture.

The viewing angles are good when viewed horizontally with accurate colors and rarely the colors appear washed out. The viewing angles are average when viewed vertically with overexposed colors and color distortion while viewing from above and below respectively.

As it uses a basic version of Windows 7, there is no way for the user to change the background of the desktop from the particular OEM image that was set by Microsoft.  The user will have to change it only by using a specific utility in the dock.

The in built speaker is effective with good audio quality with great loudness. Even at high volume levels it suffers only minimum distortion. Bass is little lacking but it is still good. The notebook can be used with external speakers or high quality headphones as an audio jack is available.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard of 1001P is easy and comfortable to use with slightly smaller keys. it is firm and is not of Chiclet style as in 1005PE.

The touchpad used in 1001P is of a Synaptics touchpad which allows the user to make gestures to perform certain tasks. Pinching the fingers together performs zoom in and pulling them apart performs zoom out respectively. The user can make a right click by tapping the touchpad thrice. The user can customize these gestures by using the control panel meant for Synaptics. The surface of the touchpad has dots to indicate the edges but this makes the surface rough resulting in slow finger movement. The right and left touchpad buttons do not have a separator between them.

There is no separate on/off wireless switch in 1001P. But it has assigned FN key shortcuts for volume, task manager, video output, screen brightness and wireless.

Input and Output Ports

There are microphone and earphone jacks, VGA output port, 4 in 1 memory card slot and 3 USB 2.0 ports. The front side has no ports but possesses only the indicator lights while the backside has the battery alone. Heat vent, security lock socket, 1 USB port, VGA out and power jack are at the left side while the Ethernet slot, 2 USB ports, jacks for the earphone and microphone and the 4 in 1 memory card slot are the right side.

1001P uses Intel’s processor and integrated graphics card such as 1.66 GHz Atom N450 of and GMA 3150. There is no lag in the system when performing normal functions like browsing, typing documents, etc.  the screen has low resolution and hence it is not capable of playing HD videos.

Heat and Noise

1001P has excellent thermal performance while consuming less power. The noise from the fan is minimum during normal operations. As the work load of the system increases, the speed of the fan also increases. But even then the noise is not heard prominently.

A 4400mAh 6-cell Li-ion battery is used in 1001P. it is estimated to provide 11 hours run time in spite of its high capacity while the 1005PE has a battery life of 14 hours.
