UPSC Exam Pattern
Among the various functions the commission is to appoint eligible candidates for civil services according to the constitution. Apart from. which the commission co-ordinates various Defence level examinations.

The UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) held Civil Service examination comprises of the following stages:

1: Preliminary Examinations: The scheme of examination is objective and has to be cleared so as to qualify for mains
2: Main Examination: The scheme of the examination is Essay type and is the qualifying stage for the next phase i.e. interview.
3: The First stage i.e. Prelims consist of two papers of Objective type and bear a maximum of 450 marks. This is meant to screen the candidates meeting the basic criteria. The screened candidates notified by the commission can appear in the main examinations for the current year.
4: The Second stage i.e. Mains consists of a written examination comprising of nine papers of conventional essay type in the subjects chosen. Indian language and English are Qualifying papers.
5: The last stage is the Personality interview wherein candidates having the qualifying marks from mains being notified by the board at their discretion are summoned for an interview.
The composition of the marks of Main Examination both in written part as well as interview ascertains the final ranking. Considering the candidates preference of various services and their ranks they would be assigned to various services and posts.
Candidates are meant to apply for Preliminary examinations after which the notified candidates are to submit a detailed application for mains.
