The figures gathered by Ofcom suggest that almost ninety percent of British homes are using digital TV. Ofcom reported an increase in the sales of TV’s with digital tuner built in relative to standalone devices. Also it estimates that by the end of April 2009, 65% of secondary TV sets are capable of showing digital TV.
The Digital Switchover proposed by the Government uses less broadcast space making way for new services such as wireless broadband, local TV and High Definition Television (HDTV) that can be received through an Aerial. As quarter of UK population does not currently receive digital signals through an aerial the analogue would be shut down so the frequencies can be reallocated to ensure a stronger signal. Most of the UK homes have already upgraded to digital service via cable (Virgin Media), satellite (sky or freesat), and aerial (Freeview).
Access to technologies through Digital Outreach is believed to have a positive impact upon people’s lives irrespective of the disadvantages, barrier and discrimination making it a simple and positive experience for viewers and providing assistance to older and vulnerable people. Digital UK is committed to implementing the Government policy of UK switchover within the agreed 2008-2012 timetable.
