the phone sounds awesome on paper but the touchwiz software it runs is rubbish. it frequently lags sometimes as long as a second when you touch buttons on the touchscreen, so much so i often find it opening up and closing the icon menu when i touch it twice thinking it didn’t register. the only way to use the inbuilt digital compass is through the subscription-only route 66 gps navigation software. it’s java implementation is buggy and samsung has offered nearly zero after-purchase software to put on it, installing java apps on it is a pain and the keyboard-substitute it gives you is inconsistent. the touchscreen is remarkably good for a resistive display, very little flex and quite accurate and sensitive but it is a bit unresponsive at the edges. the front camera on it only works for video call function, you can’t use it to capture video or simply function as a mirror (although with the right keycode input you can access this, as well as all the other sensor data). oh and i shouldn’t forget, it supposedly has the ability to use motion gestures via the accelerometer but i’ve never been able to get them to work properly, some work kinda ok, but again, looking at the hidden feature test function screen, you can see that quite clearly the accelerometer works fine, the software is just rubbish at interpreting the motion.

if samsung had put android on this phone, i doubt i would have anything negative to say about this phone. there is a project running to port android to the phone but it’s likely it will never be as good as if samsung had, instead of wasting money putting touchwiz on it, put android on it, i mean, all it needs is a full set of drivers, as it is, samsung has written drivers, closed source of course, as well as a very inconsistent interface on all the apps (for example, a secondary slider for skipping through by first letter is provided for the phonebook but not for the media player where such a function would be a lot more important especially with the capability for up to 32gb of microsd storage).

don’t buy this phone unless you want to be dumbfounded by the utter idiotic bureacracy of a software design that you are forced to use, or if you love hacking and reverse engineering ARM assembly language and want to help get android (jetdroid) ported to it.

  3. This phone looks great. I plan to take it, but my concern is divx codec. Does it support all divx files? I had bad experience with divx codecs on previous phones, since I had to convert files.

Another decent looking samsung handset with a decent spec list. Id buy this phone just for the user interface which is one of the best on the market at the moment.
