PCOS: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Most of the women think that infertility problems in them are due to the result of malfunctioning of the reproductive organs but the fact is it may be also caused due to the hormonal imbalance in the body. Among several women health issues, one of the major disorders due to improper hormonal functioning is PCOS – “Polycystic Ovarian syndrome”. In medical terms, it is also known as “Functional Ovarian Hyperandrogenism”, or “Ovarian Hyperthecosis” or “Sclerocystic Ovary Syndrome”.

What is PCOS?

This Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is mainly causing women to suffer from problems such as irregular monthly flow and also infertility sometimes. This PCOS is due to the over release of hormone called as androgen and thus that results in an ovary that is almost filled with a fluid cyst.

Doctors say that 1 out of 10 women suffer from PCOS in today’s world and the exact reason for the disease is still unknown. But the case study resulted in the fact that PCOS is hereditary in nature.

Causes

The complexity of this disease is so high so that experts are unable to end up with the exact symptoms of PCOS. One of the main causes for PCOS is the excess insulin production in the body that is left unused, triggers the hormone androgen. This affects the normal functioning of the female ovary, hair growth, weight gain or loss and even severe acne sometimes.

Stress, Depression and anxiety may also cause Polycystic Ovaries. Low level of progesterone causes irregular menstrual cycle in women.

Symptoms

Women with PCOS may gain weight at an alarming rate very easily

Acne and scars are the common side effects of PCOS

Women may skip periods for a long period or years together sometimes

It is highly impossible to shed down the pounds if you are suffering from a PCOS

If PCOS is not treated properly, it may lead to serious health issues such as high blood cholesterol, diabetes and high BP

Irregular release of eggs by the ovary causes irregular monthly periods in women and infertility sometimes.

Treatments

Science has come up with endless medications to stop the side effects of PCOS but it is still unable to fight completely against it. There is no exact cure for PCOS. Doctors can treat only on its side effects by prescribing some effective Birth Control pills.

Regular use of hormonal pills regulates the polycystic ovaries.

Birth control pills can cause regular periods and also prevents the occurrence of ovarian cancer.

Diet remedy for PCOS

Doctors prefer low carbohydrate diet for the women who suffer from PCOS.

Intake of starches and grains increases the insulin content in the body thus leading to triggering of the hormone called androgen which causes PCOS. Hence, it should be avoided in the daily diet.

It is good to take rich proteins and healthy fats which balance the fatty acids and vitamins percentage inside the body. Diet like meats, eggs, diary products, green leafy vegetables contain magnesium and vitamins in large quantity that nourishes the body.

Herbal tonics made up of raspberry leaf, red clover blossoms, comfrey leaf and oatstraw can nourish herbal infusions every day. They help us to restore the lost minerals and vitamins in the body.

Avoid coffee, alcohol, sugar, juices and drinks containing high percentage of sugar since these may increase the insulin content in the body.

Consumption of small protein meals often should be practiced in order to balance the blood sugar level inside the body.

Since Stress and depressions may also cause PCOS, it can be reduced by doing some exercises regularly, yoga and also meditation.
