Multiple Sclerosis, shortly referred as MS, is one of the commonly found nervous disorders which affect the brain and the spinal chord that comes under the central nervous system. This disorder results in an imbalance between the organs of the body and the brain thus causes vision downfall, decline of muscle strength and hearing capabilities. The main reason for the disorder is the absence of a substance called ‘myelin’ in the nerves that is slowly destroyed because of MS disorder.
Normally, the myelin cover acts as a protective shield, covering the nerves which are responsible of transmitting signals to the brains. The normal functioning of the body organs is not possible due to the absence of myelin which is essential for the co- ordination to take place between the spinal cord and the brain. This MS takes place in four major stages and altogether is known as ‘Progressive MS’. People who suffer from MS can get back to their normal life only when proper care and treatment is taken to diagnose them at the early stages because in most of the cases, this MS seems to be non fatal disorder.
Causes
There is nothing like we have a specific cause for the Multiple Sclerosis but study shows that it is an auto immune disorder, happens when our immune system attacks the myelin tissue in the nervous system by mistake but it is still unclear that why the immune system is attacking the myelin abnormally in MS patients. It is found that MS disorder is hereditary in nature; there is a great chance of inheriting the disorder from parents through the genes.
Symptoms
Normally, signs of MS disorder can be noticed in the brain regions especially in the spinal cord. But, it differs from individual to individual. The most common noticed symptoms of this disorder are blurred vision, back pain and the muscle weakness. Advanced stages of MS leads to drastic fall of vision, problems during walking and patient experiencing a sort of sudden electric shock at lower back region. Lack of co- ordination between the brain and the spinal cord results in unable to have control over urination, no grip over the objects and sometimes bad memory. It makes some patients to experience severe depression and other mental disorders.
Treatments
A patient who undergoes a MS disorder treatment must modify his lifestyle in order to lead a healthy life by reducing the symptoms. Medications are prescribed only to minimize the effects of the disorder and some of the effects are fatigue, depression, weakness, muscle pains and other genetic related problems.
Some of the medicines have highly bad side effects since those are given for multiple sclerosis, to control the pulse and to delay the intensity of the disease. But what doctors’ say is that patient needs to continue the medications and the prescribed drugs for a longer term even though it seems like it has cured. Physical therapies, speech and occupational therapies are helpful in soothing the pains. Apart from all these, a patient with MS disorder needs to modify his lifestyle by incorporating a nutritious diet and practicing exercises which gradually reduces the disease intensity.
