LG has unveiled its new LCD LH20 model which has a 42inch screen for 2009, offering extra features when compared to the other competitors of the similar type. Even an USB port to transfer the digital photos and also the adjustments for pictures has been provided in this model. The quality of picture and specs are very similar when compared to other LG models. This model is different from 19 inch and 22 inch LG models. You can find out some of the information about design, features and performance of this model below.
Design:
The chassis of this model is same as that of the other model with black glossy frame which makes it distinct from the competitors. Edge of the screen at the bottom is slightly curved and its characteristics are subtle & protruding. At the right bottom of the frame there is a power indicator illuminated which serves as a lone intonation. The stand provided for this LCD display is also black and glossy swiveling around. The remote control of this device is far better than it was for previous models but should still need improvement.
There is no dedicated button to adjust the aspect ratio which seems to be the most lacking part and to gain used to the menu buttons which are on the left lower of the huge control is quite fussy. A colored ‘Energy saving’ button which seems to be prominent on the top. On pressing this button, the settings open up. The cursor control is made up of the rubber material and the feel of clicking on it is good. The huddles of keys which are at the bottom of the remote control are used to command over the other gear which is well-matched with the HDMI – CEC control over the HDMI system.
Other devices can’t be controlled via IR from the remote. There is an extensive menu system in the LG, thus there is easy way in for the sound and picture modes, aspect ratio, other functions which are used very often and the timer adjustments. Seeing all the options some of the users get astonished but complete explanations are required to operate it on. Direct way to major functions is offered by the rotary Quick Menu. Thus, some of the designs are eyebrow rising!!
Features:
The native resolution of this LG LCD TV is 1366 x 768pixels. This LH20 is one of the best level entries amongst the LCDs which are available now. This is a rival when it comes to the features. USB port for photos has been included only in this TV of its class and also playbacks the music and digital photos on the huge screen. Full suite of Picture Wizard is used for the adjustment of pictures in this LH20. Test patterns which are internal is used to perform the basic calibrations in controlling the brightness, color, contrast, tint, backlight and vertical-horizontal sharpness.
The changed calibrations are saved in Expert1 memory picture slot settings and the preference of efforts can also be saved. The adjustment done should reach full accuracy. When compared to the other entry level LCD’s, this model gives more picture settings. There are modifiable image recall slots which are eight in number and are independent of the inputs. If these slots are in default settings, they indicate it except two Expert slots. There are backgrounds for energetic color and contrasts, color temperature presets, 3 gamma levels, noise reduction, standard and wide spaces for colors, enhancement of edge and black level controls are some of the other features.
Additional controls are offered by the Expert-Modes having the logo and also the Imaging science foundation input. Accurate grayscale can be got with the help of 10pt WB system than a less expensive 2pt system. The backlight and consumption of the watts can be reduced if the Energy Saving setting is activated than engaging the settings. With sources for HD there are 5 modes included in aspect ratio and 4 modes in SD source. Zoom can be adjusted too with the usage of one mode and there is a mode called ‘Set by Program’ where in the exact aspect ratio can be selected automatically based on the signal.
The over scans are zero when the latter mode is opted until the interference is seen along the edges of the screen. RS-232 port for controlling is an exception for custom installations and necessary for the connectivity to reach standards. At the back of the panel are the 2 HDMI ports, AV input with composite video, RGB style analog PC input, video component input, optical digital audio out and for antenna there is a RF input. There is another input for AV to the left side of the TV with USB port and composite video.
Performance:
Overall the picture controls is most accurate in this LCD and the only flaw is the light levels of black. In cinema and expert modes the settings are accurate with 35footlamberts output of light and 2.23 superb gamma but the grayscale is measured with a bit blue. This blue can be removed if the 10pt IRE adjustment meets the calibration settings. The primary and the secondary colors in this LH20 are close to the standard colors. Black level is not reached by this TV and the differences are seen clearly in the letter box bars, at the eclipse and the iconic praying monk head which is used in the title sequence.
The brighter scenes are washed away from the lighter blacks albeit to lesser extent. The details of shadow is revealing but the lighter black made shadowy areas look less realistic and defined when compared to other displays. When it comes to the color accuracy, the LG contributes to a skin tone realistic colors. Primary / secondary and saturation color accuracy are robust. Sometimes very dark areas and blue tinge to black areas are seen which seems to be worst in this type of TV lineup. Overt video processing is not done in this LH20 and no blur is found out when viewing a motion picture.
Moiré artifacts are missing in this model. The video and the film sources are properly de-interlaced in this LH20 when compared to the other competitors. The uniformity is a mixed bag where no brighter areas were found on the screen and also gave the worse off-angle performance by losing the color conformity and the black level when compared with the other company models. The screen bezel has a matte finish and performance is pretty good under the bright light and ambient attenuating light splendidly.
Outline:
When LH20 is compared to the other lineups, the performance is usual. In the DVD format, every line is resolved and also the noise is reduced effectively. This is an excellent PC monitor albeit less resolution is offered. The text is crisp in HDMI and also in VGA. Balance is not right between excessive sharpness and edge enhancements in spite of adjusting the sharpness. Now, it’s your wish to buy this!!
