How to treat Ovarian Cancer?

12

Ovarian Cancer usually occurs in woman’s reproductive organs especially in ovaries. Ovary is the place where a number of tumors grow; those tumors may be cancerous or non-cancerous. Malignant cancers are those which spread to other parts of the body. Ovarian Cancer can be mainly categorized into three types according to American Cancer Society and they are:

Epithelial tumors that appears on the cells and covers the ovaries

Germ cell tumors that appears on the eggs

Stromal tumors that starts on the tissues that produces hormones

Among these, Stage 3 ovarian cancer is the most dangerous condition where in the tumor grows on any one of the ovary or sometimes on both the ovaries.  In the worst conditions, these cancerous tumors spreads into the regions like pelvis and then to the abdomen. It may spread to the lymph nodes too.

The first step towards avoiding the spreading nature of cancer and to prevent the cancer from developing a resistance to chemotherapy treatment is surgical tumor debulking. Before this to happen, have a talk with your oncologist to discuss about the surgical options. The surgery can remove the bulk of the cancerous cells in the form of tumors, and the remained cancerous cells should be removed by chemotherapy treatment.

The most common type of treatment prescribed for ovarian cancer is chemotherapy. One more treatment called radical treatment is recommended for only those who are in the advanced stage of the disease where the cancerous cells will be ravaging the glands and trying to spread all over the body. Radical treatment involves a hysterectomy that removes both fallopian tubes and both ovaries in order to stop the spontaneous culturing of the cancerous cells.

At the same time, you can even check the new trials whether it affects the recurrence prognosis and what are the risks corresponding to it. Plan regular appointments with your doctor to get blood test done after every surgery. Blood test helps to know the levels of cancer, it also reveals whether the treatment is working or not.

Chemotherapy is nothing but the use of anticancer drugs which is injected into the body orally or intravenously in order to destroy the remained cancerous cells and prevent them from reproducing further. A chemotherapy drug contains a platinum compound drug like cisplatin or paraplatin and one more anticancer drug that is paclitaxal or docetaxal. This combination of drugs must be given in six cycles in a gap of every three weeks.

Advanced chemotherapy is in progress in order to make ovarian cancer treatment more effective. Researchers think that giving higher doses of chemotherapy to a patient increases the chance of being cured. The secret behind this is that giving high concentrated chemotherapy drugs kills more cancer cells than before.
